The ten-minute full check

Order matters less than coverage, but this sequence puts the expensive discoveries first. Start with dead pixels — two minutes, and the fault with the firmest warranty rules. Then gradients for banding and tint, and on an LCD a black field in a dark room for backlight bleed; on an OLED, swap that for the OLED slides. Next the numbers: the refresh rate test catches the monitor quietly running below its rating, and the resolution checker confirms scaling is what you think it is. Motion last among the checks — the ghosting test with your overdrive setting in reach — and then, with the faults ruled out, the calibration wizard to make a healthy panel actually look right. How do I test a monitor online?

Open the tests above, fullscreen, in roughly that order — no downloads, no account. The tools drive your actual pixels from the browser, which is all a monitor test needs: a defective pixel doesn’t care whether the solid color behind it came from an app or a web page. Ten minutes covers a monitor completely; the sequence below prioritizes the faults that are worth money.

What should I check on a brand-new monitor?

Within the return window, in this order: dead pixels (the classic day-one defect, and pixel policies are stingy after returns lapse), banding and uniformity, black-field checks in a dark room for backlight bleed, and the refresh rate — a surprising number of high-refresh monitors ship with the OS quietly running them at 60. Calibration comes last: it’s adjustment, not acceptance.

And a used monitor?

Everything above, plus history: run the burn-in fields for retention ghosts, look hard at the corners of white and gray fields for aging backlight, and treat any colored vertical line on a solid color as a dealbreaker — that’s a panel driver failing, not a setting. All of it runs from a browser on the spot, which is precisely when you want the answer.

Is a browser test as good as calibration hardware?

For finding faults — yes, it’s the same pixels either way. For color accuracy — no, and we’d rather be straight about it: the by-eye calibration gets brightness, contrast, gamma and gray balance visibly right, which is most of the everyday improvement, but profiling a display to known color values takes a colorimeter reading actual light. Fault-finding: browser. Print-accurate color: instrument.
